Amazing! With less than $500 worth of consumer photography gear — a Canon PowerShot SD700 and the Canon WP-DC5 waterproof case — Derrick Story captured these wonderful underwater photographs while snorkeling in Curacao, an island in the southern part of the Caribbean Sea.

Derrick shares his underwater photography shooting tips here. He advises photographers to:

  • Avoid using the camera’s flash, relying instead on the natural diffused light coming through the water at depths of 10 feet or less.
  • Shoot with a camera that has image stabilization since everything, including the photographer, is always moving under water.
  • Increase the ISO to 400 for a lightning fast shutter speed.
  • Use the “underwater scene mode” on your camera, if it has one, to improve the white balance.

Derrick’s work is a real inspiration to amateur photographers everywhere and we can’t wait to put some of his tips to practice the next time we’re snorkeling.
